Lasting Powers of Attorney
None of us expects to lose the ability to make our own decisions, but illness, an accident or the effects of age can happen to anyone. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) lets you choose, in advance, the people you trust to step in and act for you if you ever can't act for yourself. It's one of the most important, and most overlooked, parts of a good estate plan.
The two types of LPA
Most people put both in place, so that every eventuality is covered.
- Property & Financial Affairs. Lets your attorneys manage your money, pay your bills, deal with your bank, and buy or sell property on your behalf.
- Health & Welfare. Lets your attorneys make decisions about your medical care, where you live, and your day-to-day wellbeing, but only if you're unable to make those decisions yourself.
Why not just leave it to family?
A common and costly myth is that your spouse or children can automatically manage your affairs if you lose capacity. They can't. Without an LPA, your family would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your deputy, a process that is far slower, far more expensive, and far more stressful than putting an LPA in place now. Setting up an LPA while you're well is quick, affordable and gives everyone peace of mind.
How it works
We'll talk through who you'd like to appoint, discuss any specific instructions or preferences you want to include, complete the forms correctly (errors are a common cause of rejection), and manage registration with the Office of the Public Guardian from start to finish, in person across Yorkshire or online anywhere in England & Wales.
Our prices
All prices include 20% VAT. Office of the Public Guardian registration fees (£92 per document, with reductions or exemptions for lower incomes) are paid to the OPG at cost. We handle the paperwork and registration for you.
