Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about wills, LPAs, trusts and estate planning costs. Fixed fees, home visits across Yorkshire and online across England & Wales.
How much does a will cost?
Our single wills start from £195 and mirror wills for couples from £350, with all fees fixed and agreed before we start. More involved plans, for example a will including a protective trust, start from £595. You'll always know the full cost up front, with no hourly billing.
Do you meet in person or online?
Both. We offer face-to-face home visits right across Yorkshire, and online appointments by Google Meet or Zoom for clients anywhere in England & Wales. The advice, documents and fixed fees are the same either way.
Is the first consultation really free?
Yes, your initial consultation is completely free and with no obligation. It's a relaxed chance to talk through your wishes and understand your options. There's no pressure to proceed.
Are you solicitors?
No. We are a professional estate planning firm, not a firm of solicitors. Will writing is not a reserved legal activity and is not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. We hold full professional indemnity insurance. Where a matter needs regulated legal or financial advice, we'll always tell you and can refer you to the right professional.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney, and do I need one?
An LPA lets you appoint people you trust to make decisions about your finances or your health and welfare if you ever can't make them yourself. Without one, your family may have to apply to the Court of Protection, a slower and more expensive process. Most people benefit from putting both types of LPA in place while they're well.
Can a trust protect my home from care fees?
A trust can help protect your share of your home in certain circumstances, but the rules, particularly around "deliberate deprivation" of assets, are strict, and trusts are not right for everyone. We give honest, realistic advice about what a trust can and can't achieve before recommending anything.
What happens if I die without a will?
You'd die "intestate", and the law decides who inherits under the rules of intestacy. An unmarried partner has no automatic right to inherit, and your estate may not pass to the people you'd have chosen. A will puts you in control.
Can you help with probate?
Yes. We handle estate administration for executors at a fixed fee: valuing the estate, dealing with banks and HMRC, paying debts and distributing to beneficiaries. Applying for the grant of probate is a reserved legal activity, so that step is prepared and submitted by a regulated partner firm. We never hold estate money. See our probate page for details.
